Kolonel Server

Server Rewind is a backup and restore feature available in cPanel that allows you to recover files or MySQL databases from recent server backups. It is commonly used when files are deleted accidentally, overwritten, or when a previous version of data needs to be restored.

Availability and limitations

Before using Server Rewind, be aware of the following conditions:

  • Some hosting environments use JetBackup instead of Server Rewind.
  • Server Rewind is not available on managed VPS plans with root access.
  • Certain VPS plans do not include Server Rewind at all.
  • The feature is unavailable daily between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM based on the server location.

If Server Rewind is not visible in your cPanel interface, check for JetBackup instead. These tools are typically available on standard cPanel hosting diensten.

Understanding backup scope

Server Rewind restores data from automated server backups that are retained on a best effort basis for a limited time. These backups are designed for recovery assistance and should not replace your own independent backup strategy.

For long term retention or advanced recovery workflows, environments such as cloud-servers provide more flexible backup architectures.

Restoring files with Server Rewind

You can restore individual files, multiple files, or entire directories.

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Open the Tools pagina.
  3. In de Bestanden sectie, klikken Server Rewind.
  4. Select the backup date that contains the version you want to restore.
  5. Expand directories as needed and select only the required files or folders.

Selecting only the necessary files improves restore reliability and avoids performance issues.

Restore options for files

  • Inschakelen Overwrite existing files to replace current versions.
  • Specify an alternative restore path if you want to recover files into a separate directory.

If the account was compromised, always restore files into an empty directory and verify content before moving it back into production.

The restore duration depends on file count and size.

Restoring databases with Server Rewind

Server Rewind supports restoring MySQL databases with specific constraints.

Important database considerations

  • Database usernames longer than eight characters are not supported.
  • Deleted MySQL databases must be recreated in cPanel before restoration.
  • PostgreSQL databases cannot be restored using Server Rewind.

When to contact support

If database recreation fails or Server Rewind reports errors during recovery, assistance from the hosting provider may be required. For business critical services or complex recovery scenarios, infrastructure such as a speciale server can provide greater control over backup and restore operations.
