If your domain is currently registered with another registrar, you can transfer its billing and administration to Colonelserver. This guide explains the requirements, preparation steps, and the transfer process.
What a Domain Transfer Includes
When a domain is transferred, management and billing move to the new registrar. Ownership does not change. After completion, you manage renewals, contacts, and security from a single account.
If a transfer is not possible or not desired, you can still use Colonelserver for hosting by updating the domain name servers instead of transferring the registration.
Preparing for a Smooth Transfer
Before starting the transfer, make sure the following requirements are met:
- The domain is unlocked at the current registrar
- Registrant and administrative contact details are accurate and accessible
- WHOIS privacy is temporarily disabled to receive verification emails
- You have obtained the authorization code from the current registrar
The authorization code may also be called an EPP code, AuthInfo code, or transfer secret. If you cannot locate it, contact your current registrar for assistance.
Transfer Timing and Approvals
After the transfer is initiated, approval requests are sent to the administrative and technical contacts on record. The overall transfer time depends on how quickly these approvals are completed.
In many cases, transfers complete within a few days when approvals are confirmed promptly.
While a transfer is in progress, name server changes are typically locked. For this reason, it is recommended to update name servers before starting the transfer if changes are required.
Transferring Non United States Domains
Some country code domains require additional steps.
For UK domains, transfers use a retag process. You must request the current registrar to retag the domain to the receiving registrar. The required IPS tag will be provided during the transfer request.
For other country specific domains, procedures vary by registry. Contact the current registrar to confirm the exact steps.
Starting the Transfer
To initiate a transfer:
- Visit the Colonelserver website and open the domain transfer section.
- Enter the domain name you want to transfer and search.
- Select the domain from the results and proceed.
- Choose the billing term and confirm the order.
- Complete checkout and submit the transfer request.
You can monitor transfer status and manage related services from the Client Area.
If a Transfer Does Not Complete
If a transfer attempt fails, there are two options:
- Request another transfer attempt by contacting support
- Keep the domain with the current registrar and update name servers to use Colonelserver services
For assistance with failed transfers or status clarification, contact the team through the Support Ticket System.
Domain Management After Transfer
Once completed, domains can be managed centrally using the Colonelserver Domain service. This includes renewals, contact updates, and security controls.
Transferring a domain simplifies management and consolidates services into a single account for long term convenience.
