Get Started

Many Google services require proof that you control a website or domain before they can be used. This process is called site ownership verification and is required for tools such as Google Search Console and other Google webmaster services.

This guide explains the available verification methods and when to use each one.

Before You Begin

Before starting the verification process, you must have a Google Search Console account set up for your domain. Verification cannot be completed without initiating the process inside Google Search Console.

Available Verification Methods

Google offers multiple ways to verify ownership of a website. You only need to complete one method successfully.

HTML File Upload

One method involves uploading a verification HTML file provided by Google to your website’s document root. Once the file is accessible via your domain, Google confirms ownership automatically.

This method is commonly used when you have direct access to website files through a hosting control panel or file manager.

HTML Meta Tag

Another option is adding a verification meta tag to your website’s HTML code. The tag must be placed inside the head section of the homepage.

This approach is useful when file uploads are restricted but you can edit site templates or theme files.

DNS Record Verification

DNS verification proves ownership by adding a specific record to the domain’s DNS zone. Google supports both TXT and CNAME records.

TXT records are most commonly used for verifying primary domains. CNAME records are typically used for subdomains or domains already defined by a CNAME.

After adding the DNS record, Google checks that the value matches the one assigned to your Search Console property.

DNS records and domain settings can be managed through the Colonelserver Domain services.

Google Analytics Verification

If Google Analytics is already installed on your website, it can also be used to verify ownership. Google confirms that the tracking code is present and associated with your account.

This method requires administrator level access to the Google Analytics property.

DNS Propagation and Timing

When verifying ownership using DNS records, changes may take some time to propagate. Verification may not succeed immediately and can take several hours depending on DNS caching.

Once propagation is complete, verification can be finalized inside Google Search Console.

Managing Verification and DNS Settings

DNS and domain configuration can be reviewed and updated from the Client Area.

If you are unsure which verification method is best for your setup or experience issues completing verification, assistance is available.
